Youth Capacity Building Program

As the impacts of climate change become more pronounced across Nigeria, the need for innovative solutions and informed decision-making has never been greater. Central to these efforts are climate researchers—individuals equipped with the knowledge and skills to analyze complex environmental changes, propose actionable strategies, and drive sustainable development. Recognizing this critical need, the Ecofriendly Africa Initiative (EFAI) launched a specialized Capacity-Building Program for Climate Researchers to empower young scientists and researchers in Nigeria to sharpen specific skills in participatory data collection, as well as quantitative and qualitative data collection.

This program brought together 35 young and passionate climate researchers from across the country, each eager to contribute to tackling the challenges posed by climate change. The training was designed to address the unique needs of climate research in Nigeria, focusing on the use of data collection tools, designing questionnaires, participatory data collection, need assessments as a form of research, and designing impact evaluation tools. This knowledge will be instrumental in advancing their research abilities and outcomes.

One of the highlights of the program was recruiting the researchers into the Research Working Group of the organization, where they had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in the field during a research project embarked upon by the organization. This project aimed to collect data from farmers and herders affected by conflict resulting from climate change in Nigeria.

By the end of the program, participants had not only enhanced their technical expertise but also built a network of like-minded researchers committed to advancing climate science in Nigeria.

For many participants, the program was a turning point. “Before this training, I had the passion but lacked the tools to make a meaningful impact,” shared one participant. “Now, I feel confident and equipped to contribute to climate solutions in my community.”

The Capacity-Building Program for Climate Researchers exemplifies EFAI’s commitment to empowering young leaders with the skills they need to drive change. By investing in the next generation of researchers, EFAI is not only addressing the immediate challenges of climate change but also laying the foundation for a more resilient and sustainable future for Africa.
